When you are looking to paint the exterior of your home, one of the things that will invariably come up is the question of the choice of color to use for painting it — or colors, if you prefer using more than one color. There are so very many colors from which you can choose, and the real dilemma is how you are going to make the choice that will work for you and be good over the long term.
With that being the case, here are five tips for choosing exterior paint colors in Austin, TX in 2025
1. Consider The Neighbors
While we are not suggesting that you look to the neighbors for inspiration for the color you do use, you might want to look at their homes and come to realize a color or two that you should not use — so that your house doesn’t look like theirs. While of course every paint is different and even two people using what is ostensibly the same color could come out with a different looking house, it might be a good idea to just not have the same color house as the other people on your street if it can be avoided. Of course if you are part of a home owner’s association that restricts your colors to a few shades, it may be that you eventually could have a similar color, but that’s a different matter entirely.
2. Mind The Homeowner’s Association
If you live in a home that is part of an area that is governed by a homeowner’s association, you should be aware that what you do to the exterior of your home is heavily regulated — the association wants the look of your home to stay a certain way. That being true, you should consult with your homeowner’s association if you belong to one to find out what colors are and are not allowed in your neighborhood — and make sure that you stick to that palette, as their fines can be quite stiff.
3. Read A Magazine!
A seemingly strange but very relevant place for you to find inspiration for your home exterior, even in 2025, is magazines. Specifically, if you look into magazines that are geared toward the education of people looking to remodeling their homes, you can see a lot of information about painting the exterior of their homes, even when it comes in the form of seeing photos of houses in the magazines and taking inspiration for your own home from them.
4. Look To Nature
One really nice place where you can look for inspiration for colors for the exterior of your home is nature. More precisely, if you look to the nature in the area of your home, you can see what kind of plants and the like grow near you and try to see how they could coordinate with your home. The leaves on the trees near your home, for example, can be a good guide for the color or colors you use for your home exterior.
5. Or… Look To Your Past
Sometimes a nice place to look for inspiration for your future is to look at what you or your family has done in the past. You can do this by either asking your family what they had done in the past as far as exterior paint goes, to see how your parents house looked like when you were a baby for example. Of course you don’t have to have the exact same paint configuration — but it might inspire you to find your own color scheme!
