In most cases we recommend letting your painter buy the paint. Material control and warranty coverage travel together. We have run Brush & Color as owner-operated painting contractors in Austin, TX since 2017. Our nine year interior warranty covers work done with materials we chose. Supplying your own is still your decision. What shifts is what we can stand behind once the last coat dries.
The question usually comes up at the estimate, right after color. Homeowners assume the two decisions are the same one. They are not. You should absolutely pick the color. The brand, the line within it, and the sheen depend on the surface and the room, and those are the ones worth handing over.
What Changes When You Supply the Paint
Two things move at once. One is accountability for how the finish performs over time. The other is what happens when something goes wrong three years from now.
Say a hallway wall burnishes, or a bathroom ceiling starts to flash. The cause is either the product or the application. We can answer that confidently when we chose the product. We cannot when we did not, and neither can you. A workmanship claim then turns into an argument about fault, which is the argument a written warranty exists to prevent.
| You supply the paint | We supply the paint | |
|---|---|---|
| Color choice | Yours | Yours |
| Product and sheen selection | Yours | Ours, matched to the surface |
| Workmanship warranty | Limited, application only | Full nine year interior term |
| If the finish fails early | Cause is disputed | We return and fix it |
| Cost | Retail, minus any discount you have | Our cost plus a small markup |
Why The Warranty Depends On The Material
A nine year term runs roughly three times the industry norm. We can offer it because we control both halves of the job. Prep is one half. Product is the other.
Paint is not one thing. Within a single manufacturer there are lines we use on trim. There are others we would not put on a wall in a house with kids and a dog. The difference sits in the pigment and the binder. Cheaper formulations substitute lower cost fillers for both.
Coverage suffers first. A bargain gallon often needs three coats to hide what a better one hides in two. Washability suffers later, and that is the part you notice in year four. When we spec the product, we are pricing nine years of our own liability into the choice. Handing us a can we have never used takes that calculation away.
Where Buying Your Own Paint Makes Sense
There are real cases, and we do not argue with them. Chemical sensitivity is the clearest.
If someone in the household reacts to conventional paint, you may already know which product works. That knowledge beats ours. We keep ECOS air purifying paint on hand for nurseries and sensitive rooms for the same reason. Bring us a product you have tested yourself and we will use it.
Leftover material is the other common case. If you have four gallons of the original color and you want touch ups to match, get it out of the garage. Cost also outranks warranty on smaller work. A single guest room is a different decision from a whole house interior painting project, and we treat it that way.

How Contractor Pricing On Paint Actually Works
Volume buying is the part homeowners do not see. It changes the math more than people expect.
We buy through the same suppliers year round. That gets us pricing no individual account matches. We do add a modest markup on top of our cost. Even so, the number usually lands at or below what you would pay in the store. A painter who tells you otherwise is either not buying much paint or marking it up steeply.
There is a sharper version worth watching for. Some contractors ask the homeowner to open an account and buy the material because they cannot. That is a signal about the state of their business, not a saving. A painter who cannot carry material for a job may struggle to carry a crew through it.

What To Ask Before You Decide
Ask these at the estimate, whoever you hire. The answers separate a contractor who has thought about materials from one who has not.
- Which specific product line would you use here, and why that one over the tier below
- How does your warranty change if I supply the paint instead
- What is your markup on material, stated as a number
- How many coats does that product need on this surface, and is that in the quote
- What happens if the color reads differently once it is on the wall
A contractor who answers all five without hedging is telling you something useful. Vague answers are worth noticing. The same principle runs through the rest of the process. We have written separately about what to expect when hiring a painting contractor if you are still gathering quotes.
The Short Version
Let your painter buy the paint unless you have a specific reason not to. Pick your color, hand over the product decision, and keep the warranty intact.
If your reason is that you care what is in the can, say so at the estimate. That is a good reason. It usually leads somewhere better than a compromise. We can talk through low VOC and eco-friendly paint options that meet the standard you were trying to meet by shopping yourself.

Common Questions
Will you use paint I already bought?
Yes. We will apply material you supply. We will also tell you up front how it affects warranty coverage in that room. If the product is one we would not have chosen, we say so before we start rather than after. The decision stays yours.
Do I save money buying my own paint?
Usually not. Our supplier pricing plus a small markup typically lands at or under retail. If you hold a genuine trade account somewhere, the gap narrows. Warranty then becomes the deciding factor rather than cost.
Can I choose the color but not the brand?
That is what we recommend. Color is yours, always. Product line, sheen, and coat count depend on the surface, the light in the room, and how the space gets used.
What if the paint I supply runs out mid job?
We pause and tell you rather than substitute something close. Matching across batches or brands mid wall shows once it dries. A short delay while you pick up more of the same gives the better result.
